(General Awareness & Current Affairs)

Tip – Think of India as a giant quilt made of many colorful patches (states).

1. Where is India?

  • Location: South‑Asian country in the Indian Ocean.
  • Borders:
    • North: Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan
    • East: Bangladesh, Myanmar
    • South: Indian Ocean & Sri Lanka (nearby).
  • Shape: Long and slightly curved, like a stretched leaf that reaches from the Himalayas in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south.

Everyday analogy: If India were a road, it would start in the snowy mountains and end in a tropical beach.

2. Size & Area

  • Area: ~3.3 million km² (about the size of France + Germany).
  • Ranking: 7th largest country in the world.

Tiny example: A square of 1,800 km on each side would cover all of India.

3. States & Union Territories

  • 28 States (e.g., Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu).
  • 8 Union Territories (e.g., Delhi, Puducherry).

Analogy: 28 states are like 28 different pizza toppings, each giving the country a unique flavor.

4. Major Rivers

River Where it starts Where it ends Why it matters
Ganges Himalayas Bay of Bengal Irrigation + religious site
Brahmaputra Tibet Bay of Bengal Fertile plains
Indus Himalayas (Pakistan) Arabian Sea Water for Pakistan & India
Yamuna Himalayas Ganges Flow through Delhi
Godavari & Krishna Deccan plateau Arabian Sea Major crops
Narmada & Mahanadi Western & Central India Bay of Bengal Stone & coal mining

Everyday analogy: Rivers are the “lifelines” of India, just like roads are lifelines for cars.

5. Mountain Ranges

  • Himalayas (north) – tallest, includes Mount Everest.
  • Vindhya & Satpura (central).
  • Eastern Ghats (east).
  • Western Ghats (west) – biodiversity hotspot.

Tiny example: The Western Ghats are like a green guard that protects the western coast from the monsoon winds.

6. Climate Zones

Zone Description Example
Tropical Hot & humid, monsoon rains Kerala, Goa
Arid Dry, little rain Thar Desert (Jaisalmer)
Temperate Cooler, less rainfall Kashmir, Himachal
Sub‑tropical Moderate, rainfall varies Punjab, Haryana

Analogy: Think of India as a big kitchen—different rooms (zones) have different cooking temperatures.

7. Major Ecological Areas

  • Thar Desert (north‑west) – sandy dunes.
  • Sundarbans (east) – mangrove forest, tiger habitat.
  • Great Himalayan National Park (north) – alpine flora.

Tiny example: The Sundarbans are like a giant forest of trees that grow in water, home to tigers that love the mud.

8. Population & Culture

  • Population: ~1.4 billion (more than 200 million per state!).
  • Languages: 22 official languages + 1220+ dialects.
  • Religions: Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc.

Everyday analogy: India is like a huge family dinner where everyone brings their own dish, but all sit at the same table.

9. Time & Currency

  • Time Zone: Indian Standard Time (IST) – UTC + 5 : 30.
  • Currency: Indian Rupee (₹).
