📚 Study Notes: Parts of Speech
Madhya Pradesh PSC – English Language
(Very simple, everyday language – no heavy grammar jargon!)
1️⃣ What Are Parts of Speech?
Think of a sentence as a team.
Each word has a role – just like a player has a position (goalkeeper, striker, etc.).
The eight roles are called parts of speech.
| # | Role | Quick Analogy | Tiny Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Noun | People, places, things, ideas – the “players” of a sentence. | Dog sits. |
| 2 | Pronoun | Replaces a noun – saves us from repeating the player’s name. | He sits. |
| 3 | Verb | Action or state – the player’s move. | Dog barks. |
| 4 | Adjective | Describes a noun – tells us about the player’s appearance. | Loud dog. |
| 5 | Adverb | Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb – tells us how, when, where. | Dog barks loudly. |
| 6 | Preposition | Shows relation between noun/pronoun and other words – like a connector. | Dog under table. |
| 7 | Conjunction | Joins words, phrases, or clauses – like a bridge. | Dog barks and runs. |
| 8 | Interjection | Expresses emotion or surprise – a quick shout. | Wow! |
Tip: Every word in a sentence fits into exactly one of these roles.
