Para Jumbles – Study Notes (AP TET – English Language)

Para Jumbles (also called “Sentence Reconstruction” or “Sentence Sequencing”) tests a candidate’s ability to arrange jumbled sentences in a logical, grammatical, and coherent order.
In the AP TET exam you will be given 5–6 sentences that belong to a paragraph. The sentences are printed in a random order and you must reorder them to form a meaningful paragraph.

1. Simple Explanation

  • What you are given – 5–6 short sentences (often 5–7 words each).
  • What you must do – Write the sentences in the correct sequence (1, 2, 3, …).
  • Purpose – Checks understanding of coherence, logical flow, cause‑effect, time‑sequence, and grammar.

2. Key Points to Remember

# Key Point Why It Matters
1 Identify the first sentence Usually a topic or background sentence (e.g., “In 2010, the committee was formed”).
2 Look for transitional words Words such as first, next, then, finally, however, because, therefore, while, after, before, in contrast signal order.
3 Check for time‑sequence “Yesterday”, “later”, “afterward”, “finally” show chronological order.
4 Check for cause‑effect “Because …” → the clause that explains the preceding clause.
5 Check for contrast “However”, “on the other hand” usually follow a sentence that presents the opposite idea.
6 Check for add‑on information “Moreover”, “also”, “furthermore” usually add to a preceding idea.
7 Look for subject consistency Sentences that refer to the same subject usually stay together.
8 Eliminate impossibilities early If a sentence has “then” it cannot start the paragraph.
9 Use the “trial and error” method Try a few plausible orders, then eliminate those that break logical flow.
10 Time‑management 5 min per paragraph is enough – no need to over‑think.

3. Worked Example

Paragraph to be arranged

# Sentence (Jumbled)
a The school decided to host a science fair.
b Students were excited about the opportunity.
c The event will be held next month.
d The teachers had prepared a lot of experiments.
e On the day of the fair, the school was full of bright ideas.

Step‑by‑Step Solution

Step Analysis Decision
1 Identify the first sentence – It must set the context. Sentence a (“The school decided …”) introduces the event. Sentence a → 1
2 Look for a sentence that adds background or preparation – Sentence d (“The teachers had prepared …”) explains what happened after the decision. Sentence d → 2
3 Find the time‑indicator – Sentence c (“The event will be held next month.”) tells when it will happen. Sentence c → 3
4 Insert the reaction of participants – Sentence b (“Students were excited …”) logically follows the planning. Sentence b → 4
5 Conclude with the outcome – Sentence e (“On the day of the fair …”) completes the paragraph. Sentence e → 5

Final Ordered Paragraph

  1. The school decided to host a science fair.
  2. The teachers had prepared a lot of experiments.
  3. The event will be held next month.
  4. Students were excited about the opportunity.
  5. On the day of the fair, the school was full of bright ideas.
