Odisha TET – Reasoning Ability

Topic: Puzzles

Why learn puzzles?
Puzzles sharpen your mind, help you spot patterns quickly, and improve problem‑solving speed—skills you’ll use on the exam every day.

1. What Are Puzzles?

Puzzles are short problems that ask you to find an answer using logic, numbers, words, or pictures.
Think of them like a mini‑mystery: you’re given clues and have to deduce the missing piece.

2. Common Puzzle Types on the Exam

Type What It Looks Like Everyday Analogy
Number puzzles A grid of numbers, a series, or a simple arithmetic problem. “If 2 apples cost ₹4, how much do 5 apples cost?”
Word puzzles Jumbled letters, missing words, or sentence completion. “Finish the sentence: ‘The cat ___ on the mat.’”
Pattern puzzles A sequence of shapes or colors you must continue. “What comes next in the pattern: red, blue, red, blue, …?”
Logical deduction puzzles A set of clues that lead to a single answer. “If A is older than B and B is older than C, who is the oldest?”
Spatial puzzles Simple 2‑D or 3‑D arrangements (like a maze). “Which way should a ball roll to reach the goal?”

3. Quick Strategies (No Jargon)

Strategy How to Use It Tiny Example
Look for a pattern Count the steps, check if numbers double, add, or repeat. In 2, 4, 8, 16 → next = 32.
Work backwards Start from the answer and see how it could come from earlier steps. If the last number is 12 and each step adds 3 → previous = 9.
Eliminate Remove impossible choices quickly. If a word must have 3 letters and you have options of 2, 3, or 5 letters, drop the 2‑ and 5‑letter ones.
Trial & error Guess one option, see if it fits all clues, then try another. Try “blue” as the missing color; if it breaks a rule, pick “green.”
Use a table Write down clues side‑by‑side to see relationships. Draw a 2×2 box: Person vs. Gender.

4. One‑Minute Practice Puzzles

4.1. Number Puzzle

Puzzle: 5 × ? = 35
Step 1: 5 × 7 = 35.
Answer: 7

4.2. Word Puzzle

Puzzle: Complete the sentence: “The quick ___ jumps over the lazy dog.”
Step 1: Think of a word that fits.
Answer: “brown”

4.3. Pattern Puzzle

Puzzle: ★ ✿ ★ ✿ ★ …
Step 1: Notice the pattern: star, flower, star, flower.
Answer: Next is ★

4.4. Logical Deduction Puzzle

Clues:

  • A sits left of B.
  • C sits right of B.
  • D sits at one end.

Step 1: Place B in the middle.
Step 2: A is left of B → A on left side.
Step 3: C is right of B → C on right side.
Step 4: D at end → D could be at far left or far right.
Answer: D is on the side opposite B (if B is second, D is last).

4.5. Spatial Puzzle

Puzzle: A ball starts at the top of a ladder. It can only move down one rung at a time. How many ways can it reach the bottom in 3 steps?
Step 1: Each step has only one choice (down one rung).
Answer: 1 way (straight down).

5. Practice Tips

  1. Start small. Solve puzzles with 2–3 steps before tackling longer ones.
  2. Time yourself. Give each puzzle 30 seconds; you’ll learn to think faster.
  3. Check your work. After you finish, read the question again to make sure you answered what was asked.
  4. Review mistakes. Understand why the wrong answer didn’t fit the clues.
  5. Mix types. Practice all five puzzle types to stay balanced.

6. Quick Review Checklist

  • Can I spot a number pattern?
  • Am I able to finish a sentence with the right word?
  • Do I know how to follow a repeating shape sequence?
  • Can I deduce relationships from a set of clues?
  • Can I trace a simple path or arrangement?
