Here are study notes on "Biology Basics" for the Jharkhand TET exam, explained in a very simple, beginner-friendly way.
Biology Basics: Understanding Life Around Us
Biology is simply the study of life. It helps us understand living things, from tiny germs to huge trees and animals.
1. What is Life? (Living vs. Non-Living)
Imagine a rock and a dog. What's the difference?
- A rock doesn't grow, eat, or move on its own. It's non-living.
- A dog eats, grows, barks, and has puppies. It's living.
Living things have special features:
- Eat/Get Food (Nutrition): They need energy.
- Analogy: Like a car needs fuel.
- Breathe (Respire): They take in air (or similar) to get energy from food.
- Analogy: Like a fire needs oxygen to burn.
- Grow: They get bigger and change.
- Analogy: Like a small plant becoming a big tree.
- Move: They can change position, even if very slowly (like plants turning towards the sun).
- Analogy: Like a toy car moving when pushed (but living things move on their own).
- Reproduce: They make more of their own kind.
- Analogy: Like a photocopy machine making copies.
- Get Rid of Waste (Excrete): They throw out things their body doesn't need.
- Analogy: Like taking out the trash.
- React to Surroundings (Respond to Stimuli): They notice changes and react.
- Analogy: Like you closing your eyes if bright light shines on them.
Example: A plant is living because it
