Study Notes – Para Jumbles

(For the Himachal Pradesh Patwari / Lekhpal Program – English Language)

1. What is a Para Jumble?

A para jumble is a set of five short sentences that are mixed up.
Your job is to put them back in the right order so that the paragraph makes sense.

Think of it like a jigsaw puzzle: every sentence is a piece, and you have to put the pieces in the right place to see the whole picture.

2. Why Do We Do It?

  • Helps you read quickly.
  • Makes you think about how ideas connect.
  • Improves your writing – you learn the natural flow of sentences.

3. How Do You Solve One?

Follow these simple steps.

Step What to Look For Example
1. Find the first sentence Words that show the beginning: first, in the beginning, at first, initially “First, she opened the door.”
2. Find the last sentence Words that show the end: finally, in the end, after that, when it was over “Finally, he went home.”
3. Look for linking words “After that”, “then”, “later”, “next”, “in the evening” “After that, she went home.”
4. Use the order of the connecting words If a sentence says “after that”, it must follow the sentence that tells what happened before. If B says “After that, …”, then B comes right after the sentence that describes what happened first.
5. Check the whole paragraph Read from start to finish – it should flow logically. “She went to the market. She bought fresh veg. After that, she went home. In the evening, she cooked dinner. She felt happy.”

4. Everyday Analogy

Imagine you are making a sandwich.

  1. First layer – bread.
  2. Second layer – ham.
  3. Third layer – cheese.
  4. Fourth layer – lettuce.
  5. Last – top slice of bread.

If you put the layers in the wrong order, the sandwich will taste weird.
Para jumbles work the same way – every sentence must go in the right spot.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Why it Happens Fix
Picking a sentence that has “finally” as the first one
