Sikkim TET – Foundation & Exam Strategy

Topic: Eligibility & Pattern

Audience – Candidates preparing for the Sikkim Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), Foundation level, or any teacher‑preparation course.
Purpose – To give a rigorous, exam‑oriented understanding of the eligibility criteria and the exact exam pattern, with derivations where appropriate, tricky points that often trip candidates, and a hard practice question that tests both eligibility and pattern knowledge.

1. Eligibility – The “What” & “Why”

Requirement Details Tricky Point Why It Matters
Age Minimum: 18 years (inclusive)
Maximum: 45 years (inclusive) at the time of registration (not the examination date).
Many candidates think age limit is at the exam date. Age limit cuts off late‑comers; calculate your age exactly on the registration date.
Education • Foundation TET: 12th (or equivalent) with ≥55 % in all subjects.
• Category A: Bachelor’s or Master’s in any field with ≥55 %.
• Category B: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Education with ≥55 %.
“Equivalent” includes 10+2, 12th, or any recognized diploma.
“All subjects” means marks from every subject listed in the board’s syllabus (no “minimum” per subject).
Ensures baseline competency; “all subjects” clause is often overlooked.
Language Proficiency • English: ≥55 % OR
• Sikkimese: ≥55 % (for candidates from Sikkim).
Some assume either language is enough for all papers. Certain papers (e.g., Paper‑III for Sikkimese) specifically require that language proficiency.
Nationality Indian citizen OR foreign national with valid Indian student/visa status. Non‑resident Indians (NRIs) with overseas education may be eligible if they possess the required clearances. Makes the exam accessible to diaspora educators.
Number of Attempts No limit – but age and education must still be satisfied at the time of each attempt. A candidate who turns 46 after being eligible can still attempt later if they re‑meet age criteria. Reduces false‑alarm; keep track of age every attempt.
Application Window Usually mid‑June to mid‑August (exact dates released by Sikkim Board). The last date is registration deadline, not the exam date. Missing the registration window voids the entire process.

Quick Eligibility Checklist

# Check Pass Fail (Reasons)
1 Age 18‑45 at registration ✔ ✖ (Too young / Too old)
2 12th/Equivalent with ≥55 % ✔ ✖
3 Language proficiency (English or Sikkimese) ≥55 % ✔ ✖
4 Nationality (Indian/Indian citizen) ✔ ✖

2. Pattern – The “How”

Paper Subject Duration Questions Marks Marking Scheme
Paper‑I Teaching Aptitude & General Knowledge 60 min 50 +3 each +3 for correct, –1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted
Paper‑II Subject‑Specific (e.g., Mathematics, Science, English, etc.) 60 min 50 +3 each Same as Paper‑I
Paper‑III Language‑Specific (Sikkimese or English) 60 min 50 +3 each Same as Paper‑I
Total 180 min 150 450

Key Derivations & Timing

  1. Total Marks
    [ \text{Total} = 3 \times (\text{# of questions}) = 3 \times 150 = 450 ]

  2. Maximum Possible Score (all correct)
    [ 450 ]

  3. **Negative Marking Influence
