Reproduction – IIT‑JEE / Competitive Exam Study Notes
Audience: D.Pharm aspirants (undergraduate pharmacy), IIT‑JEE, other competitive entrance exams.
Goal: Master the biology of reproduction – conceptual depth, derivations, key formulae, tricky points, and a hard practice question.
Study Strategy:
- Read each section in depth.
- Draw the sequential flow (e.g., “Germ‑cell → meiosis → haploid gamete → fertilization → zygote → embryo”).
- Memorize the hormonal cascades (GnRH → LH/FSH → steroidogenesis).
- Work through the practice question and cross‑check with the notes.
1. Overview
| Aspect | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Gamete | Sperm (motile, ~5–7 µm) | Oocyte (large, non‑motile, ~100 µm) |
| Storage | Epididymis, vas deferens | Ovaries (follicles), uterus |
| Hormonal control | LH → Leydig → testosterone | GnRH → FSH/LH → granulosa/theca → estrogen/progesterone |
| Key stages | Spermatogenesis → capacitation → acrosome reaction → fertilization | Follicular growth → ovulation → implantation → gestation |
Reproduction = Reproduction of life, achieved by sexual (gamete union) or asexual (mitotic) mechanisms. In mammals, sexual reproduction dominates.
2. Types of Reproduction
| Type | Mechanism | Key Features | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asexual | Binary fission, budding, vegetative propagation | No genetic recombination | Bacteria, fungi |
| Sexual | Gamete fusion (meiosis + fertilization) | Genetic diversity, 2n → n | Humans, other mammals |
| Parthenogenesis | Egg develops without fertilization | Females only, may be spontaneous or induced | Some reptiles, insects |
| Clonal | Somatic cells produce genetically identical offspring | Rare in mammals | Certain plant propagation |
Tricky Point: In mammals, parthenogenesis is not viable due to absence of paternal genomic imprinting required for development.
3. Gametogenesis
3.1 Spermatogenesis
| Step | Description | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) | Self‑renewal & differentiation | Continuous |
| Primary spermatocyte | 2n → meiosis I | 8 days |
| Secondary spermatocyte | n → meiosis II | 12 h |
| Round spermatid | 1n → spermiogenesis | 10–14 days |
| Spermatozoon | 1n motile cell | 12–14 days |
- Key enzymes: DNA polymerase α (replication), Synaptonemal complex (cross‑overs).
- Differential gene expression: Protamine replaces histones in sperm tail.
Derivation: Total time for one round of spermatogenesis = 8 days (meiosis I) + 12 h (meiosis II) + 10–14 days (spermiogenesis) ≈ 22–24 days.
3.2 Oogenesis
| Stage | Description | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Primordial follicle | 2n oocyte + pregranulosa | 15 min (first division) |
| Primary follicle | 2n oocyte + granulosa | 2–3 weeks |
| Secondary follicle | 2n oocyte + granulosa + theca | 4–5 weeks |
| Graafian follicle | 2n oocyte + cumulus oophorus | 1 day before ovulation |
| MII oocyte | 1n (metaphase II) | 1 day before ovulation |
| Post‑ovulation | Meiosis II completes only after fertilization | 30 min – 1 h |
- Key enzymes: Cohesin holds sister chromatids, Synaptonemal complex for recombination.
- Error sources: Nondisjunction → aneuploidy (e.g., Down syndrome).
Derivation: Follicular maturation period ≈ 2–3 weeks (primary) + 4–5 weeks (secondary) + 1 day (Graafian) ≈ 6–8 weeks.
4. Hormonal Regulation of Reproduction
4.1 Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Gonadal (HPG) Axis
| Hormone | Origin | Target | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| GnRH | Hypothalamus | Anterior pituitary | Stimulates LH & FSH release |
| FSH | Pituitary | Granulosa cells (ovary) | Stimulates follicle growth & estrogen synthesis |
| LH | Pituitary | Theca cells (ovary) & Leydig cells (testis) | Stimulates estrogen production & ovulation; testosterone synthesis |
| Estrogen | O |
