Topic: UPI & Banking
Audience: ITI students in the COPA (ITI) stream
Goal: Understand the fundamentals of banking, the UPI ecosystem, and how to use them confidently in everyday life and the workplace.
1. Simple Explanation
1.1 What is Banking?
A bank is a trusted financial institution that:
- Accepts deposits (savings, current, fixed deposits)
- Provides loans and credit facilities
- Offers payment services (cheques, debit/credit cards, online transfers)
1.2 What is UPI?
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real‑time payment system that lets you:
- Transfer money instantly between bank accounts using a mobile phone
- Use a single mobile app for all banks (e.g., Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, Paytm)
- Make payments in person, online, or via QR codes
UPI key take‑away: Instant, 24/7, no cash, no need for bank‑to‑bank details.
2. Key Points
| Area | Key Points |
|---|---|
| Banking Basics | • Account Types – Current, Savings, Fixed Deposit, Recurring Deposit • Banking Modes – Branch, ATM, Internet Banking, Mobile Banking • KYC (Know Your Customer) – Identity & address verification (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, etc.) |
| UPI Essentials | • UPI ID – e.g., name@bank (unique to each user)• Virtual Payment Address (VPA) – Same as UPI ID • QR Code – Scanned for payments; unique to each transaction • UPI PIN – 4‑digit code to authorize each transaction |
| Security | • UPI PIN is not the same as your bank PIN • Never share your UPI PIN or OTP • Use institutional apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM) or the bank’s UPI app • Keep your phone’s OS and UPI app updated |
| Transaction Flow | 1. Open UPI app 2. Choose “Send Money” or “Pay” (scan QR) 3. Enter amount, UPI ID or scan QR 4. Confirm details, enter UPI PIN 5. Transaction completed – instant confirmation |
| Common Use Cases | • Paying rent, utility bills, or school fees • Sending money to family or friends • Receiving salary through UPI (e.g., UPI‑based payroll apps) • Making small retail purchases |
