Units & Dimensions

Simple Explanation

Physics is an experimental science. To describe the physical world around us, we need to measure various quantities like length, mass, time, temperature, etc. For any measurement to be meaningful, it must be compared against a standard. This standard is called a unit. For example, when we say a length is "5 meters", 'meter' is the unit and '5' is the numerical value.

Dimensions are a way to describe the fundamental nature of a physical quantity, irrespective of the specific units used. They tell us how a quantity is related to the basic fundamental quantities (like length, mass, time). For example, the dimension of speed is [Length]/[Time], or [L T⁻¹], meaning speed depends on length and time, but not on mass.

Understanding units and dimensions is crucial because it helps us:

  1. Check the consistency and correctness of physical equations.
  2. Derive relationships between different physical quantities.
  3. Convert units from one system to another.
  4. Understand the fundamental nature of physical quantities.

Key Points

1. Physical Quantities

Any quantity that can be measured directly or indirectly and in terms of which laws of physics can be expressed is called a physical quantity. Physical quantities are broadly classified into two types:

  • Fundamental (or Base) Quantities: These are independent of other physical quantities and cannot be expressed in terms of them. They form the basis for describing all other physical quantities.
    • SI System (International System of Units) defines 7 fundamental quantities:
      1. Length (L)
      2. Mass (M)
