Human Physiology – Beginner‑Friendly Study Notes

(For DNB CET – Biology – “Human Physiology”)

1. What is Physiology?

  • Physiology is the study of how the body works.
  • Think of the body as a city: roads, factories, power plants, and services all need to run smoothly.
  • Physiology explains how each “city system” (heart, lungs, brain, etc.) keeps the city alive and balanced.

2. The 7 Major Body Systems

System Main Job (City Analogy) Tiny Example
Circulatory Supplies “fuel” (blood) to every building. The heart is a pump that keeps traffic moving.
Respiratory Brings in “air” and removes “dust”. Breathing in is like inflating a balloon, exhaling is deflating it.
Digestive Turns food into usable energy & removes waste. Chewing is like shredding paper before recycling.
Nervous Sends messages fast, like an email system. The brain sends a “stop” message to a muscle to pause.
Endocrine Releases “chemical messages” that travel slowly. Insulin is like a mailman delivering sugar to cells.
Musculoskeletal Provides support and movement. Bones are pillars; muscles are the movers.
Immune & Excretory Keep the city clean and free of germs. Kidneys filter the blood like a water filter.

3. Body Fluids – The City’s Water Supply

  • Blood – carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste.
  • Lymph – helps fight infections.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid – cushions the brain.
  • Urine – carries waste out of the body.

4. Homeostasis – Keeping the City Balanced

  • Homeostasis means “stable conditions.”
  • The body constantly checks and adjusts:
    • Temperature (like a thermostat).
    • Blood sugar (like a vending machine that keeps a steady snack level).
    • Fluid balance (like a water tower keeping enough water).

Tiny Example:
When you run, your body sweats to cool down—just like a computer fan turning on when it gets hot.

5. Circulatory System

Component Simple Role Tiny Example
Heart Pump that pushes blood. A water pump that keeps water moving.
Blood Vessels Tubes that carry blood. A network of roads.
Blood Carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, waste. A delivery truck carrying supplies.
Blood Pressure How hard the blood pushes against the walls. The force of a water hose.

Key Point:
The heart beats about 70 times a minute at rest.

6. Respiratory System

  • Nose & Mouth – filters and warms air.
  • Trachea & Bronchi – air tubes.
  • Lungs – tiny air sacs (alveoli) where gas exchange happens.
  • Diaphragm – muscle that helps inhale/exhale.

Tiny Example:
When you breathe in, the diaphragm pulls down like a rubber ball being squeezed, creating space for air.

7. Digestive System

Organ Simple Role Tiny Example
Mouth Chews & mixes food with saliva. Shredding paper into small pieces.
Stomach Mixes food with acid. A blender that turns food into a smoothie.
Small Intestine Absorbs nutrients. A sponge soaking up water.
Large Intestine Reclaims water & makes stool. A filter that removes leftover bits.
Liver Processes nutrients & detoxifies. A factory that cleans raw materials.
Pancreas Releases enzymes & insulin. A helper that adds the right chemicals.

8. Nervous System

  • Brain – control center.
  • Spinal Cord – main highway.
  • Nerves – wires that carry messages.
  • Neurons – cells that send signals.

Tiny Example:
A neuron is like a mail carrier, delivering a message from the brain to a muscle, telling it to move.

9. Endocrine System

  • Glands that release hormones into the blood.
  • Hormones travel slowly and affect many cells.
Gland Hormone Simple Role
Pituitary Growth hormone Like a manager that tells the body to grow.
Thyroid Thyroxine Sets the body’s “speed” (metabolism).
Adrenal Cortisol Helps the body handle stress.
Pancreas Insulin Moves sugar into cells.

Tiny Example:
Insulin acts like a key that unlocks the door to a cell so sugar can enter.
