IBPS PO – English Language

Topic: Para Jumbles

Para jumbles are a popular section in the IBPS PO (Probationary Officer) exam where you are given a paragraph broken into five individual sentences (or sometimes six). Your task is to re‑arrange the sentences in their correct logical order to form a meaningful paragraph.

1. Simple Explanation

  • Input: 5 (or 6) numbered sentences that have been shuffled.
  • Output: The sentences in the proper sequence that reads as a coherent paragraph.
  • Goal: Identify the logical flow of the paragraph – introduction → development → conclusion.

2. Key Points & Strategies

# Strategy Why it Works
1 Look for the first sentence
Identify a sentence that introduces a topic or gives a general statement.
The paragraph usually starts with a broad statement.
2 Identify the last sentence
Find a concluding remark or a summary.
It often ends with “consequently”, “therefore”, “in conclusion”.
3 Spot transitional words
Words like however, therefore, meanwhile, consequently, finally, for instance, in addition, on the other hand guide the flow.
They signal the relationship between two sentences.
4 Check cause–effect relationships
Determine if a sentence explains a cause or its effect.
Helps place cause before effect.
5 Find supporting details
Sentences that give examples or elaborate on a point.
These typically follow the main statement they support.
6 Eliminate impossible positions
Some sentences can’t logically come before/after others (e.g., a concluding sentence cannot precede an introductory one).
Reduces the number of possible permutations.
7 Use process of elimination
Start placing the most certain ones and then fit the remaining.
Saves time and reduces confusion.
8 Maintain logical progression
Topic → Reason → Example → Result → Conclusion.
Mimics the natural structure of most paragraphs.
