Topic: Tenses

1. Simple Explanation

In English, tenses show when an action happens.
There are three main time frames:

Time Frame Example
Present I eat breakfast.
Past I ate breakfast.
Future I will eat breakfast.

Each time frame has four aspects:

Aspect Form Meaning
Simple eat / ate / will eat Basic action
Continuous (Progressive) am eating / was eating / will be eating Action in progress
Perfect have eaten / had eaten / will have eaten Action completed before another time
Perfect Continuous have been eating / had been eating / will have been eating Duration of an action up to a point

2. Key Points

Point Details
Subject‑Verb Agreement Singular subjects → singular verbs (e.g., She writes.); plural → plural (e.g., They write.).
Negative Formation Use do/does/did + not for simple tenses; am/is/are/was/were + not for continuous.
Question Formation Invert subject and auxiliary (e.g., Did you eat?; Are they coming?).
Time Expressions Yesterday, last week, tomorrow, already, yet, soon hint at the correct tense.
Past Perfect Had + past participle → action finished before another past event (e.g., She had left before I arrived.).
Future Perfect Will have + past participle → action finished before a future time (e.g., By next year, I will have graduated.).
Continuous vs. Simple Use continuous when action is ongoing; simple for habitual or specific instances.
Mixed Tenses In narratives, tenses may shift to reflect time changes, but remain consistent within a clause.
