📚 Study Notes – Fundamental Rights

(For FCI Recruitment – General Awareness & Current Affairs)

1. What Are Fundamental Rights?

  • Basic permissions that the government must give to every citizen.
  • Think of them as “rules of the playground” that let everyone play safely and fairly.
  • They protect you from unfair treatment and give you the freedom to live your life.

2. Where Do They Come From?

  • Written in the Constitution of India (Articles 12‑35).
  • They are “fundamental” because they are essential for a person’s dignity and well‑being.

3. The 10 Fundamental Rights (in Everyday Language)

# Right Everyday Analogy Tiny Example
1 Right to Equality No one gets a different ticket at the bus stand just because of where they come from. Two kids in school get the same lunch, no matter their background.
2 Right against Untouchability Everyone’s shoes are clean – no one is judged for the “stain” on them. A child is not denied a seat because of their family’s occupation.
3 Right to Freedom of Religion You can choose to wear any type of hat, as long as it doesn’t hurt others. A person can pray in a temple, mosque, or church.
4 Right to Freedom of Speech & Expression You can shout about your favorite book, but not shout fire in a crowded place. Writing a blog about a movie is allowed.
5 Right to Assembly You can gather with friends for a street dance, but you can’t block a road. A group of students holds a peaceful protest.
6 Right to Association You can form a club, but the club can’t force you to join. Starting a book‑club in your neighborhood.
7 Right to Movement You can travel from town A to town B, but you can’t be stopped without a good reason. Traveling from Delhi to Kolkata for a trip.
8 Right to Reside & Acquire Property You can move into a house and keep it, as long as you don’t break the law. Buying a flat in your city.
9 Right to Education Every child gets a free school, like a library that everyone can use. A child in a remote village is allowed to go to school for free.
10 Right to Work, to Live & to Protect Health You can choose any job, but employers can’t make you do unsafe work. A worker gets a safe machine at a factory.

Note: These rights are not absolute. They can be limited if the government shows a reasonable reason, like keeping everyone safe.

4. How Are They Protected?

  • Supreme Court and High Courts can review any law that violates these rights.
  • If a law is found unfair, the court can strike it down (make it invalid).
  • Think of the courts as “guardians of the playground rules.”

5. Why Are They Important for FCI?

  • Employment: Knowing these rights helps you understand the legal duties of the company.
  • Decision‑Making: Helps you spot unfair practices in recruitment, workplace safety, etc.
  • Citizenship: Being aware of your rights means you can protect yourself and others at work.
