Direction Sense – Easy Study Notes for FCI Recruitment
Direction sense is a sub‑topic of Reasoning Ability.
It tests your ability to follow a set of directions and find the final position.
Think of it like giving someone a “walk‑through” of a maze with only words.
1. What is Direction Sense?
| Term | Everyday Analogy | Quick Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Left / Right | Turning the steering wheel of a car | Move 90° to the left or right |
| Clockwise (CW) | Clock hands moving from 12 to 3 to 6 | Turn right (as the clock hand goes) |
| Anti‑Clockwise (ACW) | Clock hands moving from 12 to 9 to 6 | Turn left (opposite of CW) |
| Straight | Driving straight on a road | Keep going in the same line |
| Backwards | Walking backwards | Move opposite to the direction you’re facing |
2. How Puzzles Usually Come
- A person starts at a point (often labelled A).
- A list of directions is given, e.g. “Turn right, walk 5 steps, turn left, etc.”
- You must find the final location relative to the start (e.g., North‑East of A).
3. Simple Strategy to Solve
- Draw a grid (even a 2×2 square is enough).
- Mark the start (A).
- Follow each instruction one by one:
- Move one square per “step” or “unit” (you can decide a unit—5 cm, 10 steps, etc.).
- Change direction when the puzzle says left or right.
- For CW or ACW, picture a clock:
- CW = turn right.
- ACW = turn left.
- Keep a note of the direction you’re facing after each move.
- After the last instruction, look where you are relative to the start point.
Tip:
If you’re unsure, turn the board 90° clockwise each time you get a left or right. That way you’re always “facing” the same direction on your paper.
4. Tiny Example
Puzzle
A starts at point A.
- Move 3 steps forward.
- Turn right and move 2 steps.
- Turn left and move 1 step.
- Turn right and move 4 steps.
Where is the final point relative to A?
Solution
| Step | Action | Position on Grid (x, y) | Facing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Start | (0, 0) | North |
| 1 | 3 steps forward | (0, 3) | North |
| 2 | Right, 2 steps | (2, 3) | East |
| 3 | Left, 1 step | (2, 4) | North |
| 4 | Right, 4 steps | (6, 4) | East |
Answer: The final point is East of A (4 units to the right, 0 units up).
5. Common Pitfalls
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Mixing up left and right | Visualise turning a door – left = towards the door you’re standing on. |
| Confusing CW/ACW | Think of a clock: 12 → 3 → 6 is CW; 12 → 9 → 6 is ACW. |
| Skipping a step | Count each “step” aloud or write “S1, S2…”. |
| Not keeping track of direction | After every turn, note the new heading on your paper. |
6. Quick Practice Question
Q: A starts at point A and follows:
- Move 2 steps forward.
- Turn left, 1 step.
- Turn right, 3 steps.
- Turn right, 1 step.
- Turn left, 2 steps.
Where is the final point relative to A?
A:
- (0, 2) – North
- (‑1, 2) – West
- (2, 2) – North
- (2, 1) – East
- (2, 3) – North
Answer: North of A.
7. Final Tips
- Practice on paper until you feel comfortable.
- Use a small piece of paper and a pencil; keep the grid simple.
- Check your answer by drawing the path back to the start.
Happy practising! 🚀
