Reading a house
Three things are weighed together: which planets occupy the house, where its lord has gone, and which planets aspect it. A house with no occupants is not empty of meaning — most houses in most charts have nobody in them, and the lord's placement carries the reading.
The classification matters too. Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the angles and give strength; trikonas (1, 5, 9) are the most fortunate; dusthanas (6, 8, 12) are the difficult ones; and upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with time, which is why a malefic there is read as an advantage rather than a problem.
