What is the Canonical & Index Checker?
The canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page, and the robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag header tell them whether they may index it. This checker reads all of those for any URL and reports whether the page is indexable and which URL it declares as canonical.
Why it matters for SEO
Pages that will not index are invisible no matter how good they are. A leftover noindex from a staging site, a canonical pointing to the home page, or a canonical to a redirecting URL are among the most common reasons pages disappear from Google. This check takes seconds and rules them out.
How to read your Canonical & Index Checker results
For a normal page the canonical should be its own clean URL (self-referencing), with HTTPS and the same trailing-slash style your site uses. If the canonical points elsewhere, search engines will usually index that other URL instead. A noindex in either the meta tag or the header removes the page from search.
Expert tips
- Use absolute canonical URLs with https://.
- Never canonicalise to a URL that redirects or returns 404.
- Remove noindex before launching a site built on staging.
- Check “Page indexing” in Search Console to confirm Google’s view.
Limitations
Checks only the single URL you enter, as our server fetches it. It does not crawl the whole site, run JavaScript, or see pages behind a login.
