What is the Redirect Checker?

A redirect sends visitors and crawlers from one URL to another. This checker follows a URL hop by hop and shows each step with its status code — 301 permanent, 302 or 307 temporary, 308 permanent — until it reaches the final page, so you can see chains, loops and wrong redirect types.

Why it matters for SEO

Every extra hop slows the page and can dilute the value passed through links; long chains may stop crawlers before they reach the destination. Using a temporary 302 where a permanent 301 is intended can also delay search engines updating their index after a URL change or migration.

How to read your Redirect Checker results

Ideally a URL resolves in zero or one hop. http→https→www→trailing slash chains are common and should be collapsed into a single 301 to the final URL. A loop (A → B → A) means the page is unreachable and must be fixed immediately.

Expert tips

  • Use 301 or 308 for permanent moves, 302 or 307 only for temporary ones.
  • Update internal links to point straight at the final URL.
  • After a migration, check the top 50 old URLs from your analytics.
  • Create clean rules with the Htaccess Redirect Generator.

Limitations

Checks only the single URL you enter, as our server fetches it. It does not crawl the whole site, run JavaScript, or see pages behind a login.

Aim for one hop. Google follows up to about ten, but each hop adds latency and risk.
When redirects point back to an earlier URL in the chain, so the browser never reaches a page and shows an error.
A single, correct 301 passes ranking signals to the destination. Chains and wrong redirect types add risk and delay.
