What is the Sitemap Finder & Validator?
An XML sitemap lists the URLs a site wants search engines to crawl. This tool finds a site’s sitemap by reading its robots.txt and trying common locations (sitemap.xml, sitemap_index.xml, wp-sitemap.xml), then validates the XML and counts the URLs or child sitemaps inside.
Why it matters for SEO
Sitemaps are how new and deep pages get discovered quickly, especially on large or new sites with few backlinks. A sitemap that is missing, malformed or full of redirecting URLs wastes that channel. Knowing where a competitor’s sitemap lives is also a quick way to see their full content inventory.
How to read your Sitemap Finder & Validator results
A healthy sitemap returns valid XML, lists only canonical URLs that return 200, and is referenced from robots.txt. Sitemap indexes point to child sitemaps; each child may hold up to 50,000 URLs. Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Expert tips
- Reference every sitemap in robots.txt with an absolute URL.
- Remove noindexed, redirected and 404 URLs from sitemaps.
- Keep lastmod dates honest — only change them when content changes.
- Create one quickly with the XML Sitemap Generator.
Limitations
Checks only the single URL you enter, as our server fetches it. It does not crawl the whole site, run JavaScript, or see pages behind a login.
