What is the Hreflang Checker?
Hreflang annotations tell search engines which language or regional version of a page to show each user — for example English for India (en-IN) versus English for the UK (en-GB), or Hindi (hi). This tool reads the hreflang links on any URL and validates the language and region codes and the presence of x-default and a self-reference.
Why it matters for SEO
Without correct hreflang, Google may show the wrong version of your page — a US price page to Indian visitors, or English to Hindi searchers — and may treat translated pages as duplicates. Hreflang errors are easy to make and silent, so a validator saves a lot of lost international traffic.
How to read your Hreflang Checker results
Each language version should list every other version, including itself. Codes must be ISO 639-1 languages (en, hi) optionally followed by ISO 3166-1 regions (IN, GB). An x-default entry tells search engines which page to use when no version matches the user.
Expert tips
- Use en-IN, not en-in or en_IN in sitemaps — format matters.
- Every version must link back to the others (return links).
- Add x-default pointing at a language selector or global page.
- Keep hreflang URLs canonical and indexable.
Limitations
Checks only the single URL you enter, as our server fetches it. It does not crawl the whole site, run JavaScript, or see pages behind a login.
